YouTube Ads consulting: advertising on YouTube, from the video watched to the result measured.
What are YouTube ads?
YouTube ads are shown on YouTube videos, YouTube Shorts, search results and the home feed through video and Demand Gen campaigns set up in Google Ads. There are formats such as skippable, non-skippable, bumper, in-feed and Shorts ads, and each serves a different purpose. Video reach campaigns are used for reach and awareness, and Demand Gen campaigns for sales and leads. That’s why results on YouTube depend on matching the campaign type to the objective and measuring views against conversions.
We build your YouTube ads account from the objective: we separate video reach campaigns for awareness from Demand Gen campaigns for sales and leads, and prepare videos for skippable, Shorts and in-feed formats. What we measure isn’t views; it’s brand impact and conversions.
On YouTube, the objective determines the campaign type; an awareness campaign isn’t judged by sales metrics, and a sales campaign isn’t judged by views.
Video reach campaigns
We reach the most unique people per budget with the efficient reach, non-skip reach and target frequency options.
Demand Gen campaigns
For sales and leads, we run video and image ads together on YouTube, Shorts, Discover and Gmail.
Video views campaigns
For product or brand consideration, we aim for video views and engagement.
Channel link
We link your YouTube channel to the Google Ads account and reach your channel’s viewers again.
02
Video and format
Each format has a different length, skip rule and way of paying; the same video doesn’t fit every format.
Skippable ad
We make videos that show the brand and the offer in the first 5 seconds, and deliver the message before the skip.
Bumper and non-skippable
With 6-second bumper and non-skippable ads, we deliver the message briefly and repeatedly.
Shorts and vertical video
We prepare 9:16 vertical versions for Shorts, and check Google’s automatic vertical versions.
In-feed ad
We write thumbnails and text that invite clicks in search results and related videos.
03
Measurement and bidding
People who watch a video ad often don’t click right away; conversion measurement has to account for that viewing behavior.
Conversion tracking
We set up the Google tag and conversion actions, and report engaged-view conversions separately.
Bidding strategy
We start with Target CPM for reach, CPV for consideration, and Maximize conversions for Demand Gen.
Brand Lift
We set up a Brand Lift study that measures the change in ad recall and brand awareness with surveys.
Audience signals
We give audience signals with customer lists, website visitors and channel viewers.
How does a view turn into a result?
On YouTube, depending on the campaign type, the ad is shown before the video being watched, in the Shorts feed or in search results. A skippable ad can be skipped after 5 seconds; a conversion the viewer makes later counts as an engaged-view conversion, and the signal goes back to the bidding system.
5 secondsHow long a viewer watches a skippable ad before seeing the skip button; the most important part of the message has to fit into these seconds.2
50 conversionsGoogle’s recommendation for Demand Gen: start with Maximize conversions, and switch to Target CPA or ROAS after at least 50 conversions.5

Click to flip through the screens
The dashboard pulls Search Console and Analytics data at the same time. We update the filters to match the project’s goals and build new screens for each type of conversion step.
We build screens with filters Google’s own interface doesn’t offer. We track your queries separately in the top 3, 4–10, 10–20 and 20+ position groups.
We group keywords into clusters and look at the traffic a project gets from each cluster as a whole. We can compare an online store’s bag and shoe clusters on one screen, by search intent, against the previous period; that is a more useful way to measure success.
To report organic growth honestly, we split traffic into branded and non-branded searches. We analyze non-branded traffic separately; that is where the effect of SEO work shows most clearly.
All these filters show the losses too: not every one of the 25 screens shows green. The same screens reveal the swings caused by algorithm updates, and our recovery work starts there.
We track every keyword one by one: impressions, clicks, CTR and position on the same row. Where a keyword moves up but clicks don’t follow, we start work on the title and description.
We keep the city the traffic comes from on a separate screen. For brands with physical stores, the city breakdown decides where the budget and content go.
We compare with the same period last year: is it seasonality or real growth? A screen that looks good against the previous 90 days may be standing still against last year.
We wrote this guide for marketing and brand teams who want to advertise on YouTube, or who have already launched video campaigns in Google Ads but can’t see what the views add to sales or to the brand. Every mechanism we describe is based on the English documentation of the Google Ads Help Center; the sources are listed by number at the end of the page. We verified campaign types, formats and names against the source as of October 2026; Google has made significant naming and structural changes to video campaigns over the last two years. Our own field observations are marked separately under the heading “Expert note”.
Our YouTube Ads consulting and ad management service runs in three layers: the campaign type that matches the objective, video prepared for each format, and the measurement that connects views to results. The ten sections below explain how these layers work and what we check during setup, in that order.
What are YouTube ads, and how does advertising on YouTube work?
YouTube ads are set up in Google Ads, and advertising on YouTube starts by choosing an objective: sales, leads, website traffic, app promotion, or the objective now called “YouTube reach, views, and engagements”, formerly “awareness and consideration”.1 The objective determines the campaign subtypes, formats, networks and bidding strategies available.1 Ad videos must be hosted on YouTube; depending on the format and settings, ads can appear on YouTube and on the sites and apps of Google video partners.2
We cover search ads and Google Ads account structure separately on our Google Ads consulting page; this page goes into YouTube and video formats.
Why did Video action campaigns become Demand Gen?
Video action campaigns, used for sales and leads, have been replaced by Demand Gen campaigns: Google removed the option to create new Video action campaigns in April 2025, began upgrading existing campaigns automatically in July 2025, and moved the last campaigns to Demand Gen by April 2026.4 Demand Gen runs not only on YouTube but also on YouTube Shorts, Discover, Gmail and the Google Display Network; since March 2025 each of these placements can be selected individually, and image ads have been added alongside video formats.4
If you have an older campaign
For older campaigns that couldn’t be upgraded because of an error, Google removes them, moves them to Demand Gen with compatible settings, and pauses the new campaign so you can review it before it spends.4 In accounts we take over, we check paused Demand Gen campaigns, or ones whose settings have changed, one by one in the first week.
Which YouTube ad format is right for what?
Google Ads has six main video formats for YouTube: skippable and non-skippable in-stream ads, in-feed video ads, bumper ads, YouTube Shorts ads and the Masthead.2
Format
How it works
How you pay
Skippable in-stream
Plays before, during or after a video; can be skipped after 5 seconds
With CPV, a 30-second view (or the whole video if it’s shorter) or an interaction; with conversion and CPM strategies, impressions2
A vertical, phone-friendly experience in the Shorts feed
Depends on the campaign type
We choose the format by objective. To introduce a new product to a broad audience, bumper and non-skippable ads deliver the message briefly and in full; to reach people comparing and researching a product, in-feed ads appear in search results and related videos; and to bring people close to buying to the website, skippable ads with a button and Shorts ads do the job. Instead of stacking these formats into one campaign for the same product, we run them in separate campaigns by objective, so we can evaluate each by its own metric.
Since October 2025, the “Views” metric in Google Ads has been called “TrueView views”; the change doesn’t affect billing or how paid views are counted.2
How do you set up a video reach campaign?
Video reach campaigns are designed to reach as many unique people as possible for the budget, and offer three options.3
Efficient reach: reaches more unique people at a lower cost with bumper ads, skippable ads or a mix of both; with multi-format turned on, in-feed and Shorts ads are added too.
Non-skip reach: delivers the full message with 15-second ads, 30-second ads served mostly on connected TV, or a mix of 6- to 15-second ads (beta).
Target frequency: reaches the same people a set number of times per week or month.
In video reach campaigns, Google’s video enhancement feature uses Google AI to create 9:16 vertical versions of an uploaded horizontal video automatically; the feature is on by default in new campaigns, and versions that pass a quality review are served.3 We watch these versions before launch, and upload our own vertical edit when the product or the text is cropped.
How does a Demand Gen campaign work for sales and leads?
In Demand Gen campaigns, YouTube video ads are billed by impression; strategies that rely on conversions and ones that work without conversion data are both supported: Maximize clicks, Maximize conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS and Target CPC.5 Google recommends that advertisers new to Demand Gen start with Maximize conversions, and switch to Target CPA or Target ROAS once the campaign has received at least 50 conversions.5
In Demand Gen, video and image ads can run in the same campaign; images are prepared in square, landscape, 4:5 portrait and the 9:16 portrait ratio recommended for Shorts.6 Lookalike segments in Demand Gen are moving during 2026 from a strict similarity limit to a suggestion mode that uses the seed list as a signal.10 That’s why we set up audiences not as a limit, but as a hint given to the system.
In Demand Gen, creative shapes results more than targeting does: having landscape, square and vertical videos and images together in the same campaign lets the ad be shown in a way that suits every placement. For each product or service, we prepare videos and images that open in several different ways, and see from the data which combination drives conversions. We replace weak creatives at the end of the first weeks, and make new versions of the ones that work well.
On YouTube, a view isn’t the result; it’s where the result begins.
How are engaged-view conversions measured?
People who watch a video ad often don’t click right away; they act after finishing their viewing session, and engaged-view conversions are designed to measure that behavior.7 For a conversion to count this way, the viewer must watch at least 10 seconds of a skippable ad (or the whole ad if it’s shorter), or at least 5 seconds of an in-feed or Shorts ad, or click the call-to-action button, and the conversion must happen within the set window.7 Engaged-view conversions are also included in the “Conversions” column; when segmented by ad event type, they’re separated from click-through conversions.7
How do you measure brand impact with Brand Lift?
Brand Lift is a free tool that measures the effect of video ads not by clicks or views but by brand metrics such as ad recall, brand awareness and consideration, and it can be used in Video and Demand Gen campaigns.9 Once the campaign is live, Google shows short surveys on YouTube to two groups: people who saw the ad and people who were eligible to see it but didn’t; the difference between the two groups’ answers shows the ad’s effect on the brand.9
We recommend evaluating awareness campaigns by the Brand Lift result rather than by views. A meaningful result needs enough survey responses, so we plan the study from the start together with the campaign budget and duration.
We don’t read Brand Lift on its own; we read it together with the campaign’s reach and frequency data. If ad recall hasn’t risen, we first look at the video’s opening seconds and when the brand appears, then change frequency and the audience. We carry the result straight into the next campaign’s video and frequency plan.
How do you link a YouTube channel and creator videos?
Linking a YouTube channel to a Google Ads account lets the account show ads to people who have interacted with the channel’s videos, access organic view metrics for ad videos, and see how viewers engage with the channel after the ad.8 If you work with a creator, you can also link their video to your account with an access request or a shared code and use it as an ad; making sure you have sufficient rights to use the video as an ad is the advertiser’s responsibility.8
Linking the channel is also how you use channel viewers and subscribers as audiences: reaching people who watched your video but didn’t visit your website with a more concrete offer is the most direct way to carry the effect of an awareness campaign through to sales. We use these audiences together with customer lists and website visitors as audience signals in Demand Gen campaigns.
When working with a creator
Before using a creator’s video as an ad, we recommend agreeing the usage period, channels and regions in writing. We link the video to the account together with the creator, and put turning the ad off when the usage period ends on the calendar.
How do you plan a YouTube ads budget and bidding?
We split the YouTube budget by objective: reach campaigns are based on cost per thousand impressions and unique reach, views campaigns on cost per view, and Demand Gen on cost per conversion. In skippable ads, you pay per view with a CPV bid, and by impression with Target CPM, Target CPA and Maximize conversions strategies.2 That’s why it’s normal for the same video to run at very different costs in two different campaigns; we compare campaigns not with each other, but with their own objectives.
When planning the budget, we also take campaign duration into account: reach campaigns usually run short and intense for a specific launch or period, while Demand Gen campaigns perform better when they run continuously to keep learning. That’s why we plan the two types’ budgets on separate calendars, and prepare reaching a reach campaign’s viewers with Demand Gen as the next step once it ends.
We run a Demand Gen campaign with Maximize conversions until conversion data builds up, and switch to Target CPA or ROAS after the 50-conversion threshold.5 For reach campaigns, we plan the budget together with campaign duration and target frequency.
How does our YouTube Ads service work in the first 30 days?
The job of the first 30 days isn’t to grow the budget; it’s to match objectives to the right campaign types, prepare videos for each format and verify measurement. We work in this order:
Week 1 · Measurement and account: conversion tracking, the YouTube channel link and, if any, the migration of old Video action campaigns to Demand Gen are reviewed.
Week 2 · Video and setup: video versions are prepared for skippable, bumper, Shorts and in-feed formats; campaigns are launched separated by objective.
Week 3 · Review: view rates, skip points and engaged-view conversions are read; weak video versions are replaced.
Week 4 · First evaluation: reach and conversion results are compared with objectives; Brand Lift and next month’s video plan are set together.
What should you look for in a YouTube advertising agency?
Because YouTube ads are set up in Google Ads, many Google Ads agencies run YouTube too; what sets them apart is whether videos are edited separately for each format and how brand impact is measured. Three common models:
Model
Strength
What to watch
Video production company
Shooting and editing quality
Campaign types, bidding and measurement are often out of scope
Google Ads or YouTube advertising agency
Campaigns, measurement and reporting together
One video pushed into every format with the same edit
In-house team
Knows the brand voice and product best
Keeping up with platform changes such as the move to Demand Gen
Ask for concrete answers to these questions: which campaign type serves which objective, are videos edited separately for each format, are engaged-view conversions reported separately, how is brand impact measured, and in whose name are the account and channel?
Account and channel: the Google Ads account and YouTube channel are opened in your name; the agency is added as an authorized user, and the channel link is made with your approval.
An edit per format: skippable, bumper and Shorts each need their own version; a plan built on one long video wastes the first 5 seconds.
Separating conversions: engaged-view and click-through conversions should be shown separately in the report.
Measuring awareness: reach campaigns should be judged by Brand Lift or experiment results, not by views.
Guarantee language: a guaranteed view count or subscriber growth isn’t a sales or brand result.
What drives YouTube ad pricing and agency fees?
Advertising on YouTube costs two separate things: the ad budget paid to Google, and the fee of the partner who manages the account. Ad costs form in the auction, and how you pay depends on the format and bidding strategy. The factors behind the service fee:
Factor
How it affects the fee

YouTube Ads: frequently asked questions.
How do you advertise on YouTube, and what do you need?
YouTube ads are set up in Google Ads: first an objective is chosen, then the campaign type, video formats, audience and budget that fit it. Ad videos must be hosted on YouTube; linking your channel to the Google Ads account also lets you reach your channel’s viewers again. The Google Ads account and YouTube channel are opened in your name; the markention team handles setup and management.
How is the fee for YouTube Ads consulting set?
The fee depends on the number of campaigns, the need for video versions, the state of the measurement setup, whether there’s a Brand Lift study and the scope of reporting. We work out the scope together in the first meeting, then send a written proposal. The ad budget is separate from our service fee and is paid directly to Google. Estimated ranges are in the pricing table on this page; the final fee is set in a written proposal.
How is YouTube ad pricing calculated?
There’s no fixed price on YouTube; cost is set in the auction, and how you pay depends on the format and the bidding strategy. In skippable ads with a CPV bid, you pay when a viewer watches 30 seconds (or the whole video if it’s shorter) or interacts; with Target CPM and conversion strategies, you pay by impression. In-feed video ads are paid when they’re clicked and watched. We work out the budget your brand needs together in the first meeting, based on the objective and duration.
What’s the difference between skippable, non-skippable and bumper ads?
A skippable ad plays before, during or after a video and can be skipped after 5 seconds. A non-skippable ad is 60 seconds or shorter and can’t be skipped; a bumper ad is a short, non-skippable 6-second message. For awareness we favor non-skippable and bumper ads, and for consideration and sales, skippable and in-feed ads.
Do YouTube ads drive sales, or only brand awareness?
They can do both, but with different campaign types. Video reach campaigns are used for awareness, and Demand Gen campaigns for sales and leads; Video action campaigns were moved to Demand Gen in 2025–2026. We evaluate a sales campaign by conversions and cost per conversion, and an awareness campaign by reach and Brand Lift. We don’t promise a specific increase in sales.
When will we see results?
Ads start getting impressions after approval, and reach and view data shows up from the first days. For Demand Gen campaigns, Google recommends switching to Target CPA or ROAS after at least 50 conversions have built up; that’s why we do the conversion-focused evaluation with the data from the first weeks. A Brand Lift result appears once enough survey responses are collected.
What if we don’t have any video?
YouTube ads need video, but not every format needs a long production: 6-second bumpers, short product videos and vertical Shorts versions can be made from existing images and videos. Google’s video enhancement feature also creates vertical versions from a horizontal video; we check these versions before launch. If a shoot is needed, we plan the scope and edit together around the formats.
What is an engaged-view conversion, and why are our numbers different?
An engaged-view conversion is when someone watches enough of the ad but doesn’t click, then converts later: it takes at least 10 seconds of a skippable ad, or at least 5 seconds of an in-feed or Shorts ad. Because these conversions are included in the Conversions column in Google Ads, the number can be larger than in analytics tools that work on last click. We show this type separately in reports, and make decisions alongside sales records.
What is Brand Lift, and is it paid?
Brand Lift is a free Google tool that measures the effect of video ads on metrics such as ad recall, brand awareness and consideration. Short surveys are shown on YouTube to people who saw the ad and people who didn’t; the difference between the two groups’ answers shows the effect. A meaningful result needs enough responses, so we plan the study together with the campaign budget and duration.
Can we use a YouTuber’s video as an ad?
Yes. A creator’s video can be linked to your Google Ads account with an access request or a shared code and used as an ad. Google notes that making sure you have sufficient rights to use the video as an ad is the advertiser’s responsibility. We recommend agreeing the usage period, channels and regions with the creator in writing, and we handle the linking together.
Who runs the YouTube advertising work?
The markention team runs the work; we’re a marketing and business development operation added to your company as a module, and YouTube Ads is one of that operation’s modules. We handle the measurement setup, the plan for video versions, campaign setup, the Brand Lift study and the monthly report. In the first meeting, we confirm who your point of contact will be.
Is a YouTube advertising agency the same as a Google Ads agency?
They often work in the same account, because YouTube ads are set up in Google Ads. The difference is in the work: YouTube needs video versions per format, a reach and frequency plan, engaged-view conversions read separately, and Brand Lift. We run search and YouTube campaigns in the same account, but each against its own objective and metric.
What should you ask when choosing a YouTube advertising agency?
Ask which campaign type will serve which objective, whether videos will be edited separately for skippable, bumper and Shorts, and whether engaged-view conversions will be reported separately. Also find out whether awareness will be measured with Brand Lift or an experiment, and in whose name the account and channel will be opened. A guarantee of views or subscribers isn’t a business result.
Who keeps the accounts, the channel and the videos?
The Google Ads account and YouTube channel are opened in your name and stay with you; the ad budget is paid directly to Google. We access the accounts as authorized users. The video versions and edit files we prepare are shared with you too. When the work ends, our access is removed; the campaigns, data and videos stay with you.
